The Headache Diary becomes part of national research

From 15 October 2025, users of the Headache Diary app can easily share their diary data with researchers - helping to develop new and better treatment for headache and migraine.

Together with KBB Medic and NorHead (the Norwegian Centre for Headache Research), Youwell has helped further develop the Headache Diary so it can now be used for research in a completely new and groundbreaking way. The app, already Norway's most-used headache app, is now also a tool for researchers seeking better insight into how headache affects quality of life and which treatments work.

This is a completely new and unique way of collecting research data. By using diary entries from thousands of people with headache and migraine, we gain valuable insight that can help improve treatment. Taking part should be simple, safe, and entirely voluntary.

- Bendik Winsvold, senior researcher at NorHead

How does it work?

You download the Headache Diary on your phone. After logging five or more days, you're asked whether you want to share your data - anonymised, of course. The diary entries go into the NorHead research registry, administered by NTNU and Oslo University Hospital.

Why does this matter?

Headache and migraine affect hundreds of thousands of Norwegians - often silently. With more than a million diary entries a year, the app can give researchers data that reveals who responds to which medications, that shows links between migraine and factors such as hormones and environment, and that provides a national knowledge base for improving treatment.

Youwell is proud to be a technology partner in this work.
